I firmly believe that financial and physical health are closely related. Why? The simple fact is, if you're in great shape and feel good about yourself, you're in a much better position to make money. People that don't feel good about themselves generally make bad decisions which frequently have a negative impact on their finances.
FAT AND NOT HAPPY
At one point, I was up to 250 pounds – now, I'm a big guy, but I took a look at some old photos of me and it wasn't pretty. I also was playing a lot of tennis at the time, and my hips and most of my joints were always in pain. Not surprisingly, I was broke, heavily in debt and just not happy with myself.
I realized I needed to make a change as I felt much older than my age of 34 (I am now 38). So, I made a commitment to physical fitness and nutrition and 4 years later, I have to say, I'm in much better health. Also, my balance sheet has improved dramatically. Coincidence? I tend to think not.
WAYS TO IMPROVE
Here's a list of 5 things that I did, which I think may help improve your physical health:
1.) Take vitamins and supplements – I always thought I had a healthy diet, but when I actually took a look at what I ate, it wasn't the case. Being busy with work, I would skip meals plus I wouldn't eat as many fruits and vegetables as I should have. Also, so much of our food is processed and lacking proper nutrition.
2.) Eat Breakfast – do NOT skip this important meal! It's so important. Before, I used to skip breakfast then stuff my face at lunch, which is a sure-fire way to add on the pounds. These days, it doesn't matter how rushed I am in the morning, I make sure I get some kind of food in me.
3.) Eat 6 little meals vs. 3 large meals – eating lots of little meals throughout the day, may keep your metabolism steady which will help keep the weight off. Now, I snack constantly, which ensures that I don't binge when I get hungry.
4.) Yoga – yoga is hands down one of the best full-body workouts I've ever done. The problem with free weights is you tend to favour certain muscles which can cause injuries, aches and pains. After my first yoga class, I worked out muscles that I didn't even know I had! It's not just for women anymore – I'm seeing more and more guys at the yoga studio.
5.) Respect your body – I used to think that I had to have epic workouts to get any benefit - I also used to get to the gym at least 5 days/week. The problem was, I got really tired, dreaded working out and got injured … then you can't even work out at all! Now, I only work out 4 days MAX, and don't feel guilty about taking a couple of days off if I'm feeling tired. Listen to what your body is saying to you … it's all about consistency.
I still work out diligently at the gym … after all, I've got many more goals to achieve.
I look forward to the day when I am at my peak physical and financial best!
